Sector practice — Miami and cross-border

Industries we serve across the US and abroad

ISTEFAN CONSULTING LLC works with companies in finance, healthcare, insurance, aviation, consumer services, and cross-border businesses, among others. Sector knowledge matters, but the operating realities matter more: how revenue is recognized, what regulators expect, how long a sales cycle runs, and where the margin actually sits. This page describes how we approach the sectors where we do most of our work.

Financial services and fintech

Financial services clients tend to face two pressures at once: regulatory expectations and margin compression. We work on operating model questions, cost structure, and the reporting discipline that lenders and regulators expect.

For fintech and payments businesses, the questions often center on scaling operations without proportional headcount growth. Miami’s role as a hub for financial firms serving Latin America means many of these engagements have a cross-border element, from currency handling to multi-jurisdiction compliance coordination.

  • Reporting discipline for lenders and regulators
  • Cross-border currency and compliance coordination

Where the operating realities differ most

Two companies in the same sector can have completely different economics depending on scale, geography, and customer mix. These are the questions that tend to decide whether a recommendation holds up.

How revenue is recognized

Contract timing, subscription versus usage billing, and where a receivable actually sits on the books.

What regulators expect

Filing cycles, state-by-state variation, and the evidence a reviewer will ask to see before anything is approved.

How long a sales cycle runs

Where cash is tied up between a signed agreement and the money arriving, and how much working capital that gap needs.

Where the margin actually sits

Which locations, contracts, or service lines carry the business, and which ones quietly drain it.

Healthcare and healthcare services

Healthcare businesses operate under reimbursement rules, staffing constraints, and regulatory requirements that shape every decision. We help with performance improvement in clinics and service organizations, cost management where margins are thin, and transaction support when practices or service companies change hands.

The work usually involves understanding payer mix and staffing economics before recommending anything, since a change that helps one practice can hurt another. A clinic with a heavy commercial payer base and a clinic that leans on government reimbursement will not respond to the same cost plan.

Insurance

Insurance clients, including agencies, brokers, and service providers, deal with long sales cycles, commission structures, and regulatory filing requirements that vary by state. We support performance improvement, operating model design, and transaction advisory in this sector.

For agencies considering a sale, readiness work often focuses on book quality, retention metrics, and the reporting buyers expect to see. That preparation usually takes longer than owners assume, and it is worth starting well before a conversation with a buyer begins.

What readiness work covers

  • Policy retention by cohort and by producer
  • Commission and contingent revenue structure
  • State filing obligations across the operating footprint
  • Reporting format a buyer will ask for first

Aviation and aviation services

Aviation and related services involve capital intensity, maintenance schedules, and regulatory oversight that leave little room for operational drift. Engagements in this sector tend to focus on cost structure, vendor and maintenance contracts, and cash planning around large expenditures.

Miami’s position as a gateway to Latin America makes it a natural base for aviation businesses serving routes and customers across the region. Currency of payment, spares availability, and crew scheduling all behave differently when the route crosses a border.

Cost structure

Fixed ownership costs against variable hours flown, and where utilization stops paying for itself.

Cash planning

Sequencing heavy maintenance, parts purchases, and reserves so a single event does not strain the quarter.

Consumer services and retail

Consumer services businesses live on repeat customers, location economics, and labor scheduling. We work on unit-level profitability, pricing, and expansion decisions, including whether a concept that works in one market will work in another.

For multi-location operators, the analysis usually comes down to which sites carry the business and which ones quietly drain it. That question rarely has one answer across a whole portfolio.

Cross-border and international businesses

Many of our clients operate across borders, whether through subsidiaries, partners, or customers abroad. That brings complications: different reporting standards, currency exposure, and the practical question of who has authority to decide.

Miami’s economy is built partly on this kind of trade, and we are used to engagements where the parent company, the US operation, and local management all have different views of the same numbers.

Family-owned and owner-managed businesses

Family and owner-managed businesses have their own dynamics. Decisions often involve people who have worked together for decades, and the line between family matters and business matters is not always clear.

We work on succession planning, governance as the business grows, and the performance issues that get deferred when everyone is busy running operations. The approach has to respect how the business actually functions, not how a textbook says it should.

Why sector fit is not the whole story

Industry experience helps, but it does not replace understanding your specific business. Two companies in the same sector can have completely different economics depending on scale, geography, and customer mix.

We spend the early part of every engagement learning how your numbers work before offering a view. If your industry is not listed here, that is not a barrier. The relevant question is whether the problem fits what we do.

Questions visitors ask before a first call

My industry is not on this page. Can you still help?

Yes, in most cases. The sectors listed here are where we do most of our work, not the limit of it. What matters is whether the problem is one we handle: strategy, performance improvement, transaction advisory, or restructuring. If you describe the situation, we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

What does the first conversation actually cover?

We ask how your numbers work before offering a view: revenue recognition, cost structure, headcount, and what prompted the call now. You will leave with a clearer picture of the problem even if we never work together. Bring whatever financial reporting you already produce — we do not need a polished deck.

How do you handle a business that operates in several countries?

We start by mapping who decides what. Reporting standards, currency handling, and authority usually differ between the parent company, the US operation, and local management, and those differences are often the source of the problem rather than a detail of it. We work in English with the US entity and coordinate with local teams as needed.

Do you work with businesses outside Florida?

Yes. ISTEFAN CONSULTING LLC is based in Miami and works with companies across the United States and with international clients. Most of the work is done remotely, with on-site time where it genuinely helps. Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Tell us how your sector actually runs

A short scoping call is usually enough to establish whether your situation fits the work we do. We will ask about your operating model, your reporting, and what has changed recently. If it is not a fit, we will say so and point you elsewhere where we can.
